Moving house – do it the right way

Moving House | 22.04.14

Are you thinking of moving house and can’t quite bring yourself to make the first move? Are you happy to go house hunting but worried about the logistics of the move itself?

You wouldn’t be alone. Many house-hunters are put off by the hard work that comes with selling your house and buying a new property.

For those who genuinely fear moving house and in particular, the packing and physical move, organisation is the name of the game. From day one, prioritise your tasks, write a to do list and and make sure you stick to it. Don’t switch from one task to another. If you do, nothing will get done and important tasks will be overlooked.

Here are some useful tips to make sure that moving house is not the chore that people claim it to be.

De-Cluttering

When it comes to packing your belongings, don’t just pile up as many boxes as possible with items that have long since lost their use. It’s a pointless exercise. After all, when you arrive in your new home, you will almost certainly end up throwing most of it away. So, make sure you de-clutter, room by room. And make sure you are ruthless!

Packing

Once you’ve managed to sift through your belongings and have either thrown away or sold on ebay, those items you no longer require, it’s time to pack those that are going with you.

Once again, organisation is key. Pack one room as a time and make sure you label and pack your boxes well. If you fail to do so, unpacking the other end will be your worst nightmare.

There is also one final, but vitally important part of moving house. Make sure you have a box with your tea, coffee, cold drinks and a packet of biscuits. Maybe a bottle of your favourite red. When you arrive at your new home and have finally unpacked, you will need to sit down, relax and toast your move. Remember, if it’s red wine that floats your boat, you’ll need a couple of glasses too.
